In the summer months when the days linger and the butterflies and hummingbirds happily travel from one flowering plant to the next, the scent of the warm trees in my forest home makes my heart smile. One flowering plant that survived this long winter in my garden is Chamomile. Anthemis nobilis is a low growing perennial herb found in dry fields and cultivated gardens throughout Europe and North America. It is known for its yellow daisy-like fragrant flowers which blossom in the heart of the summertime sharing a sweet herbaceous apple-like scent.
Another chamomile species is German chamomile, also known as Chamomile blue. Matricaria chamomilla is an annual, strongly aromatic herb with delicate feathery leaves and daisy-like white flowers. Chamazulene is the organic constituent found in this species in high concentrations, providing German chamomile with its famed blue color and excellent anti-inflammatory properties. It has a strong herbal aroma similar to hay.
It is known to be very cooling and soothing for dry and itchy skin conditions.
Chamomile has been in use for over 250 years. It is considered to be one of the safest herbs and essential oils for children and adults when used correctly.
Chamomile plays an important role in modern herbal practice. It is very calming and soothing. It is extremely beneficial for relieving insomnia, anxiety and stress. It provides support for sensitive people who may feel misunderstood or hurt, and is an ally for parents dealing with temper tantrums and hyperactive children.
A wonderful way to utilize the essential oils is with the water spritzer. It is a very gentle way to experience the oils. Children especially love being sprinkled with scented water. It can be their magical fairy mist at bedtime, and you can add gemstone chips to create a tinkle-like sound and added crystal infused healing energy. To make a scented water spritzer, use a glass bottle whenever possible. In a 4 oz container add 10-15 drops of Roman chamomile essential oil. A vitamin E capsule can be squeezed in as an added preservative. Give it a shake before spraying.
Mist your chamomile spritzer around your child to calm and soothe, it is perfect at bedtime for an overtired or restless child. Use at anytime as an air freshener and mist.
Essential oils are concentrated and need to be diluted before applying them to the skin. There are many types of mediums used to carry the essential oils into the skin.
The most commonly used carrier oils in aromatherapy are the vitamin rich vegetable bases such as Jojoba, Sunflower and Sesame oil, just to name a few.
To make a massage or bath oil, add 15 drops of essential oil to 30ml of carrier oil.
For optimum health, choose wild crafted, organic and certified organic essential oils.
A practicing aromatherapist in your community can also be a reliable source for quality essential oils and products.
